Smeagol and Gollum

I was watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey the other day and noticed something very interesting about the riddle game. For one thing, it was very evident that Gollum had developed a split personality after years of possessing (and being possessed by) the Ring. For another thing, it seemed his personalities switched back and forth whenever it was his turn to ask a riddle. But when it was his turn to answer a riddle, his “Gollum” side was silent. It was Smeagol who was playing the riddle game. I’m not sure if this was a result of Smeagol’s being reminded of his happier past and temporarily conquering Gollum or if Gollum was so corrupted that he couldn’t remember even the simplest of riddle solutions. Still, it served as proof to what Gandalf said in The Lord of the Rings–that Gollum wasn’t “wholly ruined”.
