All Souls’ Day

After the festivities of All Saints’ Day, we take All Souls’ Day to remember the souls in Purgatory. They languish in Purgatory because they died with some remaining attachment to sin, but the fires they suffer are purifying fires. Also, they can suffer with the hope that it will end one day; the time will come when the Gates of Heaven will be opened to them. Today is the day we pray the De Profundis to make intercession that their time in Purgatory ends soon.

Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord.

Lord, hear my voice.

Oh, let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

If Thou, O Lord, shalt observe iniquities, Lord, who shall endure it?

For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness, and by reason of Thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath relied on His Word; my soul hath hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord,

For with Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plentiful redemption,

And He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

And may perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.
