“The Power of the Daleks”, Patrick Troughton’s first story as the Doctor, was one of the episodes lost in the BBC’s Great Archive Wipe of the 1970s, and modern fans had little hope they’d ever be able to see it for themselves. Well, they actually will be able to see it, albeit in an animated format. The BBC recently announced that “The Power of the Daleks” will be turned into an animated serial that uses audio recordings from the original cast and illustrations based on surviving photographs. This animation method has been used for previous serials where only one or two episodes were missing; this is the first time, to my knowledge anyway, that they completely reanimated an entire missing serial.
I’m extremely excited to see this out on DVD even if it is animated. “The Power of the Daleks” was one of the lost episodes I always wanted to see because it was the first-ever post-regeneration story. No one had ever suspected the Doctor could just suddenly change his face like that, so I can only imagine what it was like watching someone completely new as the Doctor for the first time. It’s different for us because we’re used to the whole regeneration concept, but it was brand new back then, and no one was sure the show could survive the change.
Of course, since I’m writing this post nearly 53 years later, I think it’s safe to say the show did all right.
